Laser hair removal contraindications: what to consider during treatment

Laser hair removal is a safe and effective treatment when performed with appropriate technology and under professional supervision. However, like any aesthetic treatment, it is important to understand what to consider and the main contraindications of laser hair removal in order to ensure good results and properly care for the skin throughout the entire process.

In this article, we review the key aspects to consider before and during treatment, as well as the situations in which it is advisable to consult a specialist beforehand.

What to consider during a laser hair removal treatment

Following good practices during treatment helps improve the effectiveness of the laser and reduce potential skin discomfort.

Consistency with sessions

Laser hair removal works on hair in the active growth phase. For this reason, it is essential to respect the recommended time intervals between sessions. Skipping sessions or waiting too long between them may delay results.

Shave the area before each session

Before the session, the skin must be shaved, but not waxed or plucked from the root. Methods such as waxing, tweezing, or depilatory creams remove the hair bulb and reduce the effectiveness of the laser.

Shaving allows the laser to act directly on the hair root.

sun exposure contraindications laser hair removal

Avoid sun exposure

During laser hair removal treatment, it is important to avoid direct sun exposure and UVA rays, especially before and after each session. Tanned skin is more sensitive and may increase the risk of irritation.

If you wish to undergo laser treatment during the summer, you should avoid sun exposure for 2–3 days both before and after the session and always apply SPF50+ sunscreen.

If you are using a tanning bed, it is important to stop at least 3 weeks before the session and wait 1 week after.

Hydration and skin care

Keeping the skin well hydrated is key throughout the treatment. It is recommended to use moisturising creams and avoid aggressive exfoliation or irritating products just before or after sessions.

Well-cared-for skin responds better to laser treatment and recovers more easily.

Do not pluck hair between sessions

After undergoing laser treatment, hair will continue to grow normally. After 10–15 days, small hair-free patches will begin to appear in the treated areas.

The remaining hair will be eliminated in subsequent sessions. If you wish to remove hair between sessions, shaving is the only recommended method.

Laser hair removal contraindications

Although it is a safe treatment, there are certain situations in which laser hair removal may not be recommended or may require prior assessment.

Recent sun exposure or tanned skin

Laser hair removal is not recommended on recently tanned or sunburned skin, as it may increase the risk of spots or irritation.

Pregnancy or breastfeeding

During breastfeeding, there is no inconvenience in undergoing laser hair removal. However, results may be slower at the beginning.

Our laser is a superficial red light in the form of heat that reaches the hair root. It does not affect fertility or pregnancy.

Nevertheless, it is always advisable to consult a doctor beforehand.

Photosensitising medication hair laser removal

Photosensitising medication

Some medications can increase the skin’s sensitivity to light. In such cases, it is important to inform the specialist staff before starting or continuing the treatment.

If the person is taking photosensitising medication, laser treatment cannot be performed until the course of medication has been completed.

Skin lesions, infections, or conditions

Areas with wounds, infections, dermatitis, or other skin conditions should not be treated until the skin has fully recovered.

Particularly sensitive skin

For very sensitive skin or in cases with dermatological history, it may be necessary to adjust the treatment or carry out a more detailed prior assessment.
