How does diode laser hair removal work?
To understand why some hair types respond better than others, it’s important to know how laser hair removal works.
The laser acts through melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. Its light is absorbed by this melanin and converted into heat, destroying the hair follicle and preventing its growth.
That’s why the darker and thicker the hair, the more melanin it contains and the more effective the treatment will be.
Is laser hair removal effective on blonde hair?
Blonde hair contains less melanin than dark hair, making it harder for the laser to detect.
It may still work in some cases of dark blonde hair, but its effectiveness is lower in very light blonde hair. This means more sessions may be required and results may be more limited, which can lead to client frustration.
In these cases, a personalized assessment is essential to evaluate the viability of the treatment.

What about red hair?
Red hair contains a different type of melanin (pheomelanin), which responds less effectively to laser treatment.
It has low absorption of laser energy, and results are generally poor in most cases.
Although some technological advances have slightly improved the response, it is not the ideal hair type for laser hair removal.

And white or grey hair?
This is the most challenging case. White or grey hair contains no melanin, which means the laser cannot detect it. The necessary thermal effect is not produced, and the treatment is ineffective.

In these cases, alternatives such as electrolysis are usually recommended, as they do not depend on pigment.
What about very fine hair?
Fine hair can also raise doubts. Even if it has color, being thinner means it contains less melanin, absorbs less energy, and may require more sessions.
Even so, the laser can progressively weaken it, and in many cases a noticeable reduction is achieved.
It’s important to have realistic expectations: the goal may be reduction and weakening rather than complete removal.
